Questions & Answers about Klarheten påverkar bevisligen hur diamanten glittrar.
What does the suffix -ligen do in the word bevisligen?
It turns an adjective or a noun stem into an adverb, similar to "-ly" in English. Here, it comes from the adjective bevislig (provable or demonstrable), making bevisligen mean "provably" or "evidently". You will see this suffix a lot at this level in adverbs like förmodligen (probably) and antagligen (presumably).
Do I need to use a preposition after påverkar?
No. Just like "affect" in English, påverkar is a transitive verb, meaning it connects directly to its object without a preposition. You say påverkar något (affects something), never påverkar på något. However, keep in mind that its noun form, en påverkan (an impact/influence), does take the preposition på.
Why is the word order hur diamanten glittrar instead of hur glittrar diamanten?
Because hur diamanten glittrar is a subordinate clause (specifically an indirect question) acting as the object of the verb påverkar. In Swedish subordinate clauses, the subject (diamanten) must come before the verb (glittrar). If you were asking a direct, standalone question, you would invert the verb and subject: Hur glittrar diamanten?
Could I just use tydligt instead of bevisligen here?
You could, but it changes the nuance. Tydligt simply means "clearly" or "obviously" based on observation. Bevisligen carries a much stronger, objective weight, meaning "provably" or "demonstrably"—implying that this fact is backed up by evidence, such as scientific gemological testing.
