Questions & Answers about Man fäster visaren över urtavlan.
This lesson focuses on the existential det in relative clauses. How would I use this sentence's vocabulary to say 'The dial that there is a watch hand attached above'?
You could say Urtavlan som det fästs en visare över. Notice how the formal subject det steps in because the real subject (en visare) is indefinite, and the locative preposition över gets stranded at the end of the relative clause.
Why use the preposition över (over/above) instead of på (on) if we are attaching the hand to the dial?
While på would imply it is attached flat onto the surface, över is used here because watch hands typically hover slightly above the face of the clock so they can spin freely.
How does the word visaren relate to the verb att visa?
The verb att visa means to show or to point. By adding the -are suffix, which creates a noun for the person or thing performing an action, we get en visare (a pointer). In the context of clocks and meters, this translates to the hand or indicator.
Instructional texts often use the passive voice. How would this sentence look if we replaced man with the s-passive?
It would be Visaren fästs över urtavlan (The watch hand is attached above the dial). Using man (one/you) with the active verb fäster is an equally natural and common way to give general instructions in Swedish.
