Questions & Answers about Ironin gör boken mer cynisk.
Why do we say mer cynisk instead of adding an ending like cyniskare?
Adjectives that end in -isk, such as cynisk, magisk, or typisk, cannot take the normal -are and -ast comparative endings. You must always use mer (more) and mest (most) to compare them.
Does gör mean 'make' here?
Yes. While göra often translates to 'to do', it is also the correct verb for making something into a certain state or quality. Just like in English, you use göra + object + adjective, so gör boken mer cynisk translates to 'makes the book more cynical'.
Both ironin and boken are in the definite form. Why isn't the adjective definite (cyniska)?
Because cynisk is placed after the verb to describe the result on the object. When an adjective is used this way, it only needs to match the gender and number of the noun, not its definiteness. Since bok is a singular en-word, we use the basic form cynisk. If it were placed directly in front of the noun, it would be definite: den mer cyniska boken.
Why is the definite form of irony ironin and not ironien?
