Questions & Answers about Jag älskar den här gula tulpanen.
Why is it den här instead of det här?
We use den här because the noun it points to, tulpan (tulip), is an en-word (en tulpan). If it were an ett-word, like äpple (apple), you would use det här.
Why does the adjective gula end in an '-a' here?
When you use a demonstrative like den här (this), any adjective following it must take its definite form, which ends in -a. So even though we are talking about a single tulip, the adjective becomes gula instead of gul.
Why is the noun tulpanen in the definite form when we already used den här to mean 'this'?
This is a classic Swedish rule often called double definiteness. When you use den här or den där with a noun, the noun itself must also take its definite ending. So structurally, you are saying 'this here yellow the-tulip'.
How would this sentence change if I used denna instead of den här to mean 'this'?
If you use the slightly more formal demonstrative denna, the noun drops its definite ending, though the adjective keeps the -a. The sentence would be Jag älskar denna gula tulpan. Using den här is much more common in everyday spoken Swedish.
