Questions & Answers about De flesta varumärken har också fysiska butiker.
Why doesn't varumärken take the definite form after de flesta?
Even though de flesta starts with the definite article de, the phrase means 'most' in a general sense. In Swedish, de flesta must always be followed by a noun in its indefinite plural form. That's why we say de flesta varumärken and not de flesta varumärkena.
How does the plural form varumärken work?
Varumärke is an ett word that ends in a vowel. In Swedish, ett words ending in a vowel form their plural by simply adding -n. So, ett varumärke (a brand) becomes flera varumärken (several brands).
What words make up the compound varumärke?
It is built from vara, meaning 'commodity' or 'good' (like goods in a store), and märke, meaning 'mark' or 'label'. Together, they form the word for 'brand' or 'trademark'.
Why does fysiska end in an 'a' here?
It is an adjective describing the plural noun butiker (stores). Whenever an adjective modifies a plural noun, it takes the plural ending -a, giving us fysiska butiker instead of the singular fysisk butik.
