Questions & Answers about Bagaren lyfter fem säckar mjöl.
Why is there no word for 'of' between säckar and mjöl?
In English, you say 'sacks of flour', but Swedish drops the preposition when expressing a measure or quantity. You simply put the container or unit (säckar) directly next to the substance (mjöl). You will see this pattern everywhere, like in en kopp kaffe (a cup of coffee).
Why does bagaren end in -aren?
The base noun is en bagare (a baker). Nouns ending in -are often describe professions or people doing an action. To make them definite ('the baker'), you just add -n to the end, resulting in bagaren.
Why doesn't mjöl have a plural or definite ending here?
Mjöl (flour) is an uncountable ett-word. Just like in English, we do not usually count it. In a quantity phrase like this, the substance being measured always stays in its basic indefinite, uncountable form.
What verb group does lyfter belong to?
It belongs to Group 2. The infinitive is att lyfta (to lift). Because the stem ends in a consonant, it takes the -er ending in the present tense to become lyfter.
