Breakdown of Eriks familj drömmer också om resmålet.

Questions & Answers about Eriks familj drömmer också om resmålet.

Why do we use om here to mean "about"?

In Swedish, certain verbs are locked to specific prepositions. To express "dream about" something, you always use the combination drömma om. This is a set phrase (a collocation) you need to memorize, similar to how we say "listen to" rather than "listen at" in English.

Why is också placed after the verb drömmer?

This is a classic example of the V2 (verb-second) rule. The entire phrase Eriks familj acts as the subject in the first position. The verb drömmer must come second. Short adverbs like också (also) are typically placed immediately after the verb in main clauses like this one.

I noticed there is no apostrophe in Eriks. Is that normal?

Yes! Unlike English, Swedish almost never uses an apostrophe to show possession. You simply attach an s directly to the end of the owner's name or noun.

How is the word resmålet built?

It is a compound noun made of the root of resa (trip or travel) and mål (goal or target), literally translating to "the travel goal". Because mål is an ett-word, the entire compound word acts as an ett-word and takes the definite suffix -et to become resmålet (the destination).
