Questions & Answers about Vilka bilar är svarta?
Why do we use vilka in this sentence instead of vilken or vilket?
Vilka is the plural form of 'which'. We use it here because we are asking about multiple cars (bilar). If we were asking about a single car, we would use the form for en words: vilken bil (which car).
Why is the noun just bilar (cars) and not bilarna (the cars)?
After question words like vilken, vilket, and vilka, Swedish always uses the indefinite form of the noun. This is similar to English, where we say 'which cars' instead of 'which the cars'.
Why does the word for black (svart) have an -a added to the end to make svarta?
Adjectives in Swedish have to match the noun they are describing. Because we are talking about plural bilar, the adjective takes its plural form, which almost always means adding an -a to the end.
Does the verb är change because we are asking about plural cars?
No, Swedish verbs never change based on the number of things or people. The word är translates to both 'is' and 'are', so it looks exactly the same here as it would if we asked about just one car.
