Questions & Answers about Kvinnan tycker om att sjunga låten.
Why do we use att sjunga instead of the present tense sjunger?
Just like in English, you wouldn't say "The woman likes sings the song." You need the infinitive (base) form of the verb, which is "to sing". In Swedish, att is the word for "to" (the infinitive marker), and sjunga is the base form of the verb.
Do all infinitive verbs end in -a like sjunga?
Most of them do! The vast majority of Swedish verbs in their base (infinitive) form end with the letter -a. You will usually see this form right after the marker att.
Doesn't tycker normally mean "thinks"? Why does it mean "likes" here?
On its own, tycker does mean "thinks" (as in having an opinion). However, when you combine it with the little word om, it creates a set phrase. Together, tycker om translates to "likes".
Why are there extra letters at the end of Kvinnan and låten?
Those endings are a quick refresher on how Swedish says "the"! Instead of putting a separate word in front of the noun, Swedish attaches an ending. En kvinna is "a woman", but kvinnan is "the woman". Similarly, en låt is "a song", and låten is "the song".
