Questions & Answers about Är skolan bra?

How does the word order make this a yes/no question?
To ask a yes/no question in Swedish, you put the verb first. In a regular statement, the subject comes first (Skolan är bra = The school is good). By swapping them and putting the verb first (Är skolan bra?), it turns into a question. This is called V1 (verb-first) word order!
Why is the word for school skolan instead of skola?
Skolan means 'the school', while en skola means 'a school'. In Swedish, you attach the word for 'the' directly to the end of the noun. Because skola is an en-word ending in a vowel, we just add -n to make it skolan.
Why doesn't the adjective bra change its ending here?
The word bra (good) is a wonderful exception in Swedish! Most adjectives change their endings depending on whether the noun is an en-word, an ett-word, or plural. However, bra is an indeclinable adjective, meaning it never changes form. It will always just be bra no matter what noun it describes.
