The Career Fair
Let's start with some useful vocabulary for navigating a career fair and networking in your industry.
| The economist is standing in the booth at the fair. | Ekonomen står i montern på mässan. |
| I think that it is important to network in the industry. | Jag tycker att det är viktigt att nätverka i branschen. |
Dropping the article
In English, we use "a" or "an" when stating someone's job, role, or nationality ("I am an economist", "She is a Spaniard").
In Swedish, when stating someone's profession, nationality, or affiliation, you simply leave out the indefinite article (en or ett) after the verb är (am/is/are).
| He is a representative for the company and is standing in the booth. | Han är representant för företaget och står i montern. |
| My colleague is German, but she is also an economist. | Min kollega är tysk, men hon är också ekonom. |
| The man is a Spaniard and a consultant here. | Mannen är spanjor och konsult här. |
Group Affiliations
The exact same rule applies when talking about someone's membership in an organization or group. Notice how medlem (member) is used without an article.
| My brother is a consultant and a member of the group. | Min bror är konsult och medlem i gruppen. |
| Since he is not a representative, he is not a member. | Eftersom han inte är representant, är han inte medlem. |
