### Present Wishes

To say "If only...", Swedish uses a combination of *om* and the adverb *ändå*. You start the sentence with *om*, place the subject, and follow it with *ändå* and a verb in the **past tense** (preterite). Even though the verb is in the past tense, it describes a hypothetical wish for the present moment.

If your wish uses the verb "to be" (*vara*), it is highly common to use its subjunctive form, *vore* (were), rather than the standard past tense *var*.

### Past Regrets

When you are shivering in the wind, you are not just wishing for things right now—you are also regretting the mistakes that got you there. To express a wish about the past ("If only I had..."), use *om ... ändå* with the **past perfect** tense (*hade* + supine).
