Minutes past the hour
When checking a television schedule (en tablå), you often need to read the exact time a channel broadcasts (sänder) a program. To express minutes past the hour, use över (past).
| The channel broadcasts the documentary at ten past four. | Kanalen sänder dokumentären klockan tio över fyra. |
Quarter past and quarter to
For 15-minute intervals, Swedish uses the word kvart (a quarter). Use kvart över for "a quarter past" and kvart i for "a quarter to".
| In the schedule, the sports start at a quarter past six. | I tablån börjar sporten kvart över sex. |
| The commercials interrupt the broadcast at a quarter to seven. | Reklamen avbryter sändningen kvart i sju. |
| Does the broadcast start at a quarter past eight or a quarter to nine? | Börjar sändningen kvart över åtta eller kvart i nio? |
Exact and approximate times
Modify time expressions with adverbs like exakt (exactly) or ungefär (approximately). When specifying an exact number of minutes past the hour, you can include the word minuter (minutes).
| The documentary ends approximately twelve minutes past five. | Dokumentären slutar ungefär tolv minuter över fem. |
| The time was exactly a quarter to eleven. | Klockan var exakt kvart i elva. |
Future durations with "om"
To say that a program starts or ends "in" a certain amount of time, use the preposition om. When referring to a 15-minute duration, use the phrase en kvart (a quarter of an hour).
| The program that they broadcast ends in approximately twenty minutes. | Programmet som de sänder slutar om ungefär tjugo minuter. |
| The new season starts in a quarter of an hour. | Den nya säsongen börjar om en kvart. |
