Identical and Similar Items
When you want to describe items as "identical" or "of the same kind" (such as when buying matching souvenirs for your family), Swedish uses the word likadan. Because it functions like an adjective, it changes its form to match the gender (en or ett) and number (singular or plural) of the noun it modifies.
Singular En-words: Likadan
If the item is a singular en-word, use the base form likadan.
| I want to buy an identical cap for my brother. | Jag vill köpa en likadan keps till min bror. |
Singular Ett-words: Likadant
For singular ett-words, add a -t to the end to make it likadant.
| We are looking for an identical postcard in the tourist shop. | Vi letar efter ett likadant vykort i turistbutiken. |
Plural Items: Likadana
When describing multiple identical items, add an -a to form likadana. You will use this plural form for all plural nouns, regardless of whether they are en or ett words.
| He always buys identical souvenirs for his parents. | Han köper alltid likadana souvenirer till sina föräldrar. |
| They want to buy two identical keychains for the children. | De vill köpa två likadana nyckelringar till barnen. |
Dropping the Noun
If the item you are talking about is already clear from context, you do not need to repeat it. You can drop the noun and use likadan, likadant, or likadana entirely on their own to mean "an identical one" or "identical ones."
| Anna's keychain is beautiful. I also want an identical one. | Annas nyckelring är vacker. Jag vill också ha en likadan. |
| This mug is nice, so I am buying an identical one. | Den här muggen är fin, så jag köper en likadan. |
