Regular Group 2 verbs (-er)

Group 2 Verbs: The -er Ending

Group 2 is a major class of regular verbs in Swedish. In the present tense, these verbs take an -er ending.

Like all Swedish verbs, the form stays exactly the same no matter who is doing the action. For example, the infinitive läsa (to read) becomes läser.

to read
läsa
I am reading the letter now.
Jag läser brevet nu.
The boy and the girl are playing outside.
Pojken och flickan leker ute.
We know the man.
Vi känner mannen.
She needs the letter.
Hon behöver brevet.

The Verb "Tycka om" (To like)

Some Swedish verbs are made of a base verb and a small word called a particle. A common example is tycka om (to like).

In the present tense, tycka becomes tycker, followed by the particle om.

to like
tycka om
I like the dog and the cat.
Jag tycker om hunden och katten.

Questions and Negations

Sentence structure rules remain the same for Group 2 verbs:

  • Yes/No Questions: Start with the verb.
  • Open Questions: Put the verb right after the question word.
  • Negations: Put inte after the verb.
Are you helping the woman?
Hjälper du kvinnan?
Who are you calling?
Vem ringer du?
The child is not playing here.
Barnet leker inte här.

When using a particle verb like tycka om, inte goes between the verb and the particle.

The man does not like the coffee.
Mannen tycker inte om kaffet.
