Object emphasis

Emphasizing the Object

Normally, Swedish follows a Subject-Verb-Object (SVO) word order. To emphasize what you are talking about, you can move the object to the front of the sentence.

Because Swedish enforces the V2 (verb-second) rule, putting the object first pushes the subject after the verb, creating an Object-Verb-Subject (OVS) structure.

Garlic, I detest.
Vitlök avskyr jag.
Junk food, we avoid.
Skräpmat undviker vi.

OVS with Adverbs

When your sentence includes a sentence adverb like aldrig (never) or alltid (always), place it immediately after the subject: Object + Verb + Subject + Adverb.

Mushrooms, he never eats.
Svamp äter han aldrig.
The seafood, I always cook with garlic.
Skaldjuren lagar jag alltid med vitlök.
Junk food, we avoid, of course.
Skräpmat undviker vi ju.

OVS with Auxiliary Verbs

If your sentence uses an auxiliary verb, the V2 rule only applies to the first verb. The main verb stays later in the sentence.

Spicy seafood, she will probably love.
Kryddiga skaldjur kommer hon nog att älska.
The sour milk, he will throw away.
Den sura mjölken kommer han att kasta.

Making Direct Contrasts

Placing the object first is incredibly common when directly contrasting two things.

The junk food he detests, but the chicken he loves.
Skräpmaten avskyr han, men kycklingen älskar han.
