The negative prefix "miss-"
Swedish uses the prefix miss- much like the English "mis-" to indicate that an action is done wrongly, or to express a negative state.
Adding it to a verb like sköta (to manage) creates missköta (to mismanage), while adding it to an adjective like nöjd (satisfied) gives missnöjd (dissatisfied). These prefixes easily carry over into nouns, such as misskötsel (mismanagement) and missnöje (discontent).
| The boss seems to mismanage the company. | Chefen verkar missköta företaget. |
| We are dissatisfied with the mismanagement at the office. | Vi är missnöjda med misskötseln på kontoret. |
| The politician misjudges the discontent in the city. | Politikern missbedömer missnöjet i staden. |
| The journalist abused the power and misled us. | Journalisten missbrukade makten och missledde oss. |
The pejorative prefix "van-"
The prefix van- also creates negative words, but it carries a stronger sense of severity, neglect, deficiency, or disgrace. For example, vård means care, but vanvård means neglect. A reputation (rykte) can be ruined and become a vanrykte (disrepute).
You will also frequently see miss- used to describe broader bad conditions or irregularities, such as ett missförhållande.
| The hospital where they neglect the patients is known for the neglect. | Sjukhuset där de vanvårdar patienterna är känt för vanvården. |
| The irregularity led to the disrepute. | Missförhållandet ledde till vanryktet. |
| Because of the misrule, they neglect the animals. | På grund av vanstyret vanvårdar de djuren. |
Scandals and negligence
These prefixes are highly productive when discussing scandals, systemic failures, or professional negligence in the news. Both noun and verb forms are frequently paired to describe how bad management leads to disastrous results.
| Erik's mismanagement and misrule destroyed the company. | Eriks misskötsel och vanstyre förstörde företaget. |
| Anna's article reveals the neglect and the irregularities. | Annas artikel avslöjar vanvården och missförhållandena. |
