The Emphatic Echo Response
When a simple "yes" doesn't capture the sheer scale of a disastrous family road trip, you can dramatically validate a question by echoing it back as an isolated om-clause ("if" or "whether").
By rhetorically asking "Whether he was?" or "If they did?", you set the stage for an explosive, highly emphasized answer.
| Was he carsick? He threw up in the backseat! | Om han var åksjuk? Han spydde i baksätet! |
| Did the children whine? They cried the whole way. | Om barnen gnällde? De grät hela vägen. |
Echo the premise to build tension before delivering the punchline:
| Did the navigator work? We took an enormous detour. | Om navigatorn fungerade? Vi tog en enorm omväg. |
| Was I furious? I was completely distraught. | Om jag var rasande? Jag var helt förtvivlad. |
If the context is already clear, you can trim the om-clause down to just the essential pronoun and verb.
| Was the breakdown worse after the detour? If it was? The dad was furious! | Var sammanbrottet värre efter omvägen? Om det var? Pappan var rasande! |
Expressing Regret with Tänk om
Combine tänk (imagine) with an om-clause to form tänk om (imagine if), expressing strong wishes or regrets about an alternate reality.
| Imagine if we had avoided the detour and the breakdown! | Tänk om vi slapp omvägen och sammanbrottet! |
