When you are faced with a strict choice between two outcomes—like defusing an explosive charge or fleeing the building—you need a reliable way to say "either X or Y."

In Swedish, "either ... or" translates to antingen ... eller. However, when presenting two complete actions or clauses as choices, Swedish often uses a slightly expanded structure: antingen ... eller så.

The V2 Rule in Both Clauses

Starting your sentence with antingen has an immediate grammatical consequence: the V2 (verb-second) rule. Because antingen occupies the first position in the clause, the verb must come next, pushing the subject into the third position.

The second half of the choice is introduced by eller så (or else / or so). The resumptive word så acts as a connecting adverb. Just like antingen, this så takes the first position of its own clause, triggering the V2 rule a second time. The verb must come immediately after så.

Structure: Antingen + [Verb 1] + [Subject 1] ..., eller så + [Verb 2] + [Subject 2] ...

Let's look at this double-inversion in action:

Notice the word order carefully on both sides of the comma: Antingen klipper du (Either cut you) and eller så exploderar bomben (or so explodes the bomb).

Keeping the Pressure On

This double-inversion pattern remains strictly consistent, no matter what vocabulary you are dealing with. It creates a clear, rhythmic separation between two high-pressure scenarios.

If either clause uses a helper verb (like måste or kan), the helper verb takes that crucial V2 spot right after antingen or så, while the main verb stays in its infinitive form later in the sentence.
