The Days of the Week
In Swedish, all the days of the week end in -dag (day). Unlike in English, days of the week are not capitalized in Swedish unless they start a sentence.
| English | Swedish |
|---|---|
| Monday | måndag |
| Tuesday | tisdag |
| Wednesday | onsdag |
| Thursday | torsdag |
| Friday | fredag |
| Saturday | lördag |
| Sunday | söndag |
| Today is Monday and we have to work. | Idag är det måndag och vi måste jobba. |
| Friday is a fantastic day! | Fredag är en fantastisk dag! |
Saying "On" a Day
To talk about an event happening "on" a specific day, use the preposition på before the day (for example, på måndag).
When you start a sentence with a time phrase, Swedish uses the V2 (verb-second) rule. The verb must come immediately after the time phrase, pushing the subject to the third position.
| On Monday we will meet the boss. | På måndag ska vi träffa chefen. |
| On Wednesday I have to clean the room. | På onsdag måste jag städa rummet. |
| On Saturday we will work out at the gym. | På lördag ska vi träna på gymmet. |
If the time phrase comes at the end of the sentence, the standard word order applies:
| Are you coming to school on Tuesday? | Kommer du till skolan på tisdag? |
| We are traveling to Sweden on Friday. | Vi ska resa till Sverige på fredag. |
