Counting by Tens
Most Swedish multiples of ten end in -tio, similar to the English "-ty".
| Number | Swedish |
|---|---|
| 30 | trettio |
| 40 | fyrtio |
| 50 | femtio |
| 60 | sextio |
| 70 | sjuttio |
| 80 | åttio |
| 90 | nittio |
| 100 | hundra |
These numbers never change form to match the noun they modify. As always, the nouns they count must be in their plural form.
| She has thirty books. | Hon har trettio böcker. |
| They have forty guests at the party. | De har fyrtio gäster på festen. |
| We see a hundred birds in the garden. | Vi ser hundra fåglar i trädgården. |
Ages and Prices
Larger numbers are essential for everyday contexts like stating ages and talking about money.
State ages using a number followed by år (years) and optionally gammal (old):
| The woman was thirty years old. | Kvinnan var trettio år gammal. |
| My dad is fifty years old. | Min pappa är femtio år gammal. |
For prices, place the number directly after the verb kostar (costs). You don't need to specify the currency if it's clear from context:
| Does the jacket cost fifty? | Kostar jackan femtio? |
| The sweater is cheap and it costs seventy. | Tröjan är billig och den kostar sjuttio. |
