Contrastive connectors (emellertid, dock)

Presenting Counterpoints

When presenting contrasting ideas, English relies heavily on "however." In Swedish, the two most common equivalents are:

  • dock (however)
  • emellertid (however)

Both words function as sentence adverbs. Unlike English, where "however" often floats at the beginning or end of a sentence set off by commas, Swedish typically places these adverbs right after the first conjugated verb.

Dock (However)

Dock is a common and professional way to say "however." Because it is a sentence adverb, it follows the conjugated verb. If the sentence uses a helping verb, dock slots directly between the helping verb and the main verb.

The developer has, however, created a user-friendly design.
Utvecklaren har dock skapat en användarvänlig design.

Emellertid (However)

Emellertid means the same thing as dock but carries a slightly more formal or academic tone. It follows the exact same placement rules.

The new app, however, threatens privacy.
Den nya appen hotar emellertid integriteten.

Contrasting Two Statements

You will often use these adverbs in a follow-up sentence to introduce a contrast. Notice how dock remains tucked behind the verb begränsar.

They store the files. We, however, limit the usage.
De lagrar filerna. Vi begränsar dock användningen.

Negations and Modal Verbs

When your counterpoint includes a negation like inte (not), the connector (dock or emellertid) always comes before the negation.

The screen time is, however, not always harmful.
Skärmtiden är emellertid inte alltid skadlig.

Similarly, with modal verbs like måste (must) or verbs taking an infinitive like vägrar (refuses), the connector stays right after the first conjugated verb.

There is a new app. We must, however, regulate it.
Det finns en ny app. Vi måste dock reglera den.
The developer, however, refuses to regulate the algorithm.
Utvecklaren vägrar emellertid att reglera algoritmen.
