Concessions (visserligen ... men)

Concessions (Visserligen ... men)

To acknowledge a counterpoint before making your main argument, use the pair visserligen ... men (admittedly ... but).

The circus is admittedly fun, but it is highly dangerous.
Cirkusen är visserligen rolig, men den är livsfarlig.
The acrobat is admittedly skilled, but he can fall.
Akrobaten är visserligen skicklig, men han kan ramla.

Word Order

Visserligen is a sentence adverb. In a standard main clause, it typically comes immediately after the verb (and the subject). The second clause is then introduced by the conjunction men (but) to present your counter-argument.

The acrobat admittedly balances in the air, but she uses the safety net.
Akrobaten balanserar visserligen i luften, men hon använder skyddsnätet.

This structure works exactly the same with a dummy subject like det (it):

It is admittedly difficult to balance, but I love the trapeze.
Det är visserligen svårt att balansera, men jag älskar trapetsen.
