Compound adjectives (snötäckt, hembakad)

Swedish allows you to create highly descriptive adjectives by combining a noun with a participle. This creates vivid imagery in a single word—perfect for describing thrilling environments like caves and mountains.

Active Characteristics: Noun + Present Participle

To describe an active characteristic, combine a noun with a present participle. These typically correspond to English adjectives ending in "-ing", such as skräckinjagande (terrifying) or tidsödande (time-consuming).

The grammar rule to remember here is simple: compound adjectives ending in a present participle (-ande or -ende) are invariable. They never change form to match the noun's gender, number, or definiteness.

Both of them are thrill-seeking, but the excursion is time-consuming.
Båda två är spänningssökande, men utflykten är tidsödande.
Is the time-consuming expedition really terrifying?
Är den tidsödande expeditionen verkligen skräckinjagande?

Passive States: Noun + Past Participle

To describe a passive state—what has been done to something—combine a noun with a past participle. These usually translate to English adjectives ending in "-ed", such as snötäckt (snow-covered).

Unlike present participles, these compounds function like standard adjectives. They must agree with the noun they modify in gender (en/ett), number (singular/plural), and definiteness. Notice how the endings adapt depending on what is being described:

We stood in front of a moss-covered and snow-covered cliff.
Vi stod framför en mossbeklädd och snötäckt klippa.
We ate home-baked bread in the sunlit valley.
Vi åt hembakat bröd i den solbelysta dalen.
Both were hungry and wanted home-baked cookies.
Båda var hungriga och ville ha hembakade kakor.

Putting It All Together

Once you are comfortable with both types of compound adjectives, you can easily pair them together to paint a highly detailed picture of an expedition or landscape.

A moss-covered stone is eye-catching in the snow.
En mossbeklädd sten är iögonfallande i snön.
The water-filled cave is life-threatening for a thrill-seeking diver.
Den vattenfyllda grottan är livshotande för en spänningssökande dykare.
