In previous lessons, you learned that an adjective's ending changes depending on whether the noun is an en-word or an ett-word. When dealing with plural nouns, the rule becomes even simpler!
The Plural Ending (-a)
When describing multiple items, you do not need to worry about the noun's gender. To form a plural adjective, simply add an -a to the end of its base form. This applies to both en-words and ett-words.
| I want to buy stylish trousers. | Jag vill köpa snygga byxor. |
| He always chooses dark belts. | Han väljer alltid mörka skärp. |
Describing Clothing
Many items of clothing, such as shoes (skor) or trousers (byxor), are frequently used in the plural. Whenever you describe them, make sure to add the -a ending to your adjective.
| Do you have comfortable socks? | Har du sköna strumpor? |
| She needs thick sweaters for the winter. | Hon behöver tjocka tröjor till vintern. |
| We are looking for comfortable shoes. | Vi söker sköna skor. |
Putting It Together
Whether you are talking about one pair of trousers or a whole pile of garments (plagg), as long as the noun is plural, the adjective takes the -a suffix.
| They are selling light clothes today. | De säljer ljusa kläder idag. |
| He buys new garments. | Han köper nya plagg. |
