Adding Information
In formal or written Swedish, use the connectors vidare (furthermore) and därtill (moreover) to add extra facts to your statements.
| The geologist goes into the new mine in order to look for the gold. | Geologen går in i den nya gruvan för att leta efter guldet. |
Using Vidare (Furthermore)
Vidare introduces an additional point. If you place it at the beginning of a sentence, the Verb-Second (V2) rule applies: the conjugated verb must immediately follow vidare, pushing the subject to the third position.
| Furthermore, the geologist found an unknown mineral. | Vidare hittade geologen ett okänt mineral. |
| Furthermore, they discovered the deposit under the bedrock. | Vidare upptäckte de fyndigheten under berggrunden. |
You can also place vidare later in the sentence. In a main clause, it typically comes right after the first conjugated verb (and the subject).
| There is furthermore a dangerous crack in the shaft. | Det finns vidare en farlig spricka i schaktet. |
Using Därtill (Moreover)
Därtill means "moreover" or "in addition to that" and follows similar placement rules.
When starting a new sentence with därtill, the V2 rule applies, placing the verb before the subject:
| The mine is old. Moreover, the deposit is almost empty. | Gruvan är gammal. Därtill är fyndigheten nästan tom. |
When därtill immediately follows the conjunction och (and) to introduce a new clause, it acts as the first element of that clause. The verb must immediately follow it:
| Most people do not know where the ore is located, and moreover it is hard to find. | De flesta människor vet inte var malmen finns, och därtill är den svår att hitta. |
Alternatively, därtill can sit mid-sentence, typically landing after the finite verb:
| The ore is valuable, and we moreover found a new mineral. | Malmen är värdefull, och vi hittade därtill ett nytt mineral. |
