Focusing on the Action
When you want to place heavy emphasis on an action, you can use a "pseudo-cleft" sentence. Just like in English when we say "What the bee does is flap its wings," Swedish builds this structure using vad (what).
Start the sentence with vad, your subject, and the helper verb gör (does/do). Follow this with är (is), the infinitive marker att (to), and finally the action you are highlighting in its infinitive form.
| What the bee does is flap its wings. | Vad biet gör är att slå med vingarna. |
| What the bees do is produce honey from nectar. | Vad bina gör är att producera honung av nektar. |
Emphasizing Past Actions
To emphasize an action that has already happened ("What the beekeeper did was..."), you must shift both of your structural helper verbs into the past tense.
Change gör to gjorde (did), and är to var (was). The main action at the very end of the sentence remains in the infinitive form, since it still follows att.
| What the beekeeper did was open the beehive. | Vad biodlaren gjorde var att öppna bikupan. |
| What the large bee colony did was swarm. | Vad det stora bisamhället gjorde var att svärma. |
| What we did was remove the wax from the honey in the beehive. | Vad vi gjorde var att ta bort vaxet från honungen i bikupan. |
