Questions & Answers about По-моему, США не согласились.
Why is the verb согласились in the plural here?
The acronym США stands for Соединённые Штаты Америки (the United States of America). When assigning grammatical number or gender to an indeclinable initialism, Russian looks at the core noun of the full phrase. Since the core noun Штаты (States) is plural, the verb must take the plural form согласились.
Does the acronym США ever change its endings for different grammatical cases?
No, it is completely indeclinable. Whether it is the subject of the sentence as it is here, or used in a prepositional phrase like in the USA (в США), the spelling and pronunciation of the acronym remain exactly the same.
How exactly is the acronym США pronounced when speaking this sentence?
It is pronounced as сэ-шэ-а. Even though the Russian letter С is normally pronounced эс when reciting the alphabet, the standard pronunciation for this specific initialism uses сэ to make it flow more easily in conversation.
Why is there a comma after По-моему?
In Russian, introductory words that express a speaker's attitude or source of information, such as по-моему (in my opinion) or кажется (it seems), must be separated from the rest of the sentence by commas.
