Questions & Answers about В тайнике мы обнаружили крупный бриллиант.
How does the word order in this sentence tell us it is "a large diamond" and not "the large diamond"?
In Russian, the most important or "new" information (the Rheme) usually goes at the end of the sentence. By placing крупный бриллиант last, it tells us this is a previously unmentioned item being introduced, which acts like the English indefinite article "a". If the sentence were about a specific, already-known diamond, the word order would likely shift to place the diamond earlier, such as Крупный бриллиант мы обнаружили в тайнике (The large diamond, we discovered in the hiding place).
Why use крупный here instead of the more common большой for "large"?
While both mean big or large, крупный is the natural collocation (word pairing) for jewels, pearls, sums of money, and businesses. You will often see it used for things that consist of distinct units or grains. Saying большой бриллиант is perfectly understandable, but крупный бриллиант sounds much more native and precise in Russian.
What is the difference in nuance between using обнаружили and just saying нашли?
Найти is the everyday, neutral word for finding something. Обнаружить translates closer to "discover", "detect", or "reveal". It implies uncovering something that was intentionally hidden or previously unknown. Since they are looking in a тайник (hiding place), обнаружили fits the investigative or adventurous context perfectly.
