Questions & Answers about Вдали мерцало то ли жёлтое пятно, то ли свет в окне.
How does то ли ..., то ли ... differ from или ..., или ... in this sentence?
While или ..., или ... presents a simple factual choice (either A or B), то ли ..., то ли ... expresses the speaker's epistemic doubt and confusion. It implies they are squinting into the distance and genuinely cannot figure out what they are looking at.
Why is the verb мерцало in the neuter form when one of the subjects, свет, is masculine?
When a verb comes before a compound subject joined by disjunctive conjunctions like то ли ..., то ли ..., the verb typically agrees with the nearest noun. Since the neuter noun пятно comes first, the verb takes the neuter past tense form мерцало.
Why does the verb мерцало come before the subjects it refers to?
This is a standard Russian word order pattern for setting a scene. When introducing new information, Russian sentences often start with the location (Вдали), followed by the verb (мерцало), and end with the new elements being introduced (the spot and the light).
Does the imperfective verb мерцало add any specific nuance here?
Yes, мерцало implies that the light was continuously or repeatedly flickering over a duration of time. This ongoing, unsteady action perfectly complements the speaker's lingering uncertainty expressed by то ли ..., то ли ....
