Question 1

Why is the multidirectional verb таскают used here instead of the unidirectional тащат?

Accepted Answer

Moving houses involves the movers making multiple trips back and forth between the house and the truck. Because the action consists of repeated, round-trip movements, the multidirectional verb таскать is required. If we were describing them dragging a single sofa in one specific direction right now, we would use тащат.

Question 2

Why use a verb for dragging or pulling (таскать) instead of the standard verb for carrying (носить)?

Accepted Answer

While носить means carrying something generally, таскать implies hauling something heavy, bulky, or requiring significant physical effort. Movers hauling large pieces of furniture perfectly fits the heavy, cumbersome nature of таскать.

Question 3

Why is the phrase for "during the move" written as во время переезда?

Accepted Answer

The phrase во время is a fixed prepositional expression meaning "during," and it always triggers the genitive case. The word переезд (relocation) becomes переезда in the genitive. Also, the preposition в becomes во here to make pronunciation easier before the tricky вр consonant cluster.

Question 4

What case is хрупкую мебель, and why doesn't the word мебель change its ending?

Accepted Answer

It is in the accusative case because it is the direct object of the verb. The adjective хрупкая (fragile) changes to хрупкую, but мебель is a feminine noun ending in a soft sign. For these feminine nouns, the accusative form is exactly identical to the nominative form.
