Questions & Answers about Эхо летит над рекой, словно поёт птица.

Why is the verb поёт in the present tense, when the English translation uses the past tense "were singing"?

In English, hypothetical comparisons ("as if") use the subjunctive mood, which often looks like the past tense. In Russian, conjunctions like словно, как будто, and точно do not automatically force a past tense or subjunctive form. You simply use the indicative tense that matches the logical time of the action. Since the echo is flying right now, the imagined bird is singing right now, so Russian uses the present tense поёт.

Can I replace словно with как будто or точно in this sentence?

Yes, they are essentially interchangeable here. Как будто is the most common and neutral choice in everyday speech. Словно and точно mean the exact same thing but tend to sound slightly more literary or poetic, which perfectly matches the descriptive imagery of this sentence.

Why is the word order поёт птица (verb-subject) instead of птица поёт?

Russian uses flexible word order to control emphasis, typically placing the most important or "new" information at the end of a clause. By placing птица at the end, the sentence builds up to the reveal of what is making the sound. It also gives the clause a flowing, poetic rhythm. Птица поёт is grammatically fine, but sounds more like a dry statement of fact.

Why does the sentence use the unidirectional verb of motion летит instead of the multidirectional ?
