Questions & Answers about Чем лучше продукт соответствует стандарту, тем выше цена.
Why is стандарту in the dative case here?
The verb соответствовать (to correspond to, to match) requires its object to be in the dative case. This is a perfect example of the "Dative of Matching" taught in this lesson: when a subject aligns with, submits to, or is measured against a standard, rule, or expectation, that standard takes the dative.
How do we form the "The [more]..., the [more]..." structure in Russian?
You use the formula чем + [comparative], тем + [comparative]. In this sentence, that gives us Чем лучше (The better) and тем выше (the higher). Notice that Russian uses these instrumental pronouns (чем and тем) to link the comparisons, unlike English which just repeats the definite article "the".
Could I say тем цена выше instead of тем выше цена?
Yes, both word orders are grammatically correct. However, putting the comparative adjective right after тем (тем выше цена) is very natural and slightly more common here. It neatly mirrors the Чем лучше structure at the beginning of the sentence, keeping the emphasis on the changing values.
Does the verb соответствовать have a perfective pair for when a product finally "matches" the standard?
Not in this context. Соответствовать is an imperfective verb that describes a continuous state (matching, fitting, or corresponding). Because it describes an ongoing fact or condition rather than an action with a clear finish line, you will almost exclusively see it in the imperfective.
