Questions & Answers about Я не люблю книги, где убивают детей.
Why does the Russian sentence use the active verb убивают (they kill) when the English translation uses the passive "are killed"?
In Russian, it is very common to express a general passive idea ("are killed") by using the impersonal third-person plural ("they kill"). Because there is no subject like "they" (они) in the clause, the focus shifts to the action and the object, which feels just like the English passive voice.
Why is детей used here instead of the nominative дети?
Even though "children" is the subject in the English translation ("children are killed"), in Russian they are the direct object of the verb убивают (literally "they kill children"). Because дети (children) is an animate noun, its accusative plural form matches the genitive plural, which is детей.
Since the verb люблю is negated, shouldn't книги be in the genitive case (книг)?
You can use the genitive of negation here (Я не люблю книг), but using the accusative case (книги) is also completely correct and very common in modern spoken Russian. The accusative is often preferred for concrete objects or specific categories, so both are perfectly fine here.
Can I use в которых (in which) instead of где (where) here?
Yes! You can absolutely say книги, в которых убивают детей. Using где (where) to mean "in which" is just a more casual and very natural way to link the clauses in conversational Russian, even when referring to something like a book or a movie rather than a physical geographic place.
