Questions & Answers about Мы ждём тебя внизу.
Why is there no Russian word for "for" before тебя?
In English, we say "wait for someone," but the Russian verb ждать directly takes an object. You simply use the person or thing you are waiting for right after the verb, without needing a preposition like для.
Is тебя in the accusative or the genitive case here?
It is in the accusative case. The verb ждать takes the accusative case for specific, living things (like a specific person). However, it usually takes the genitive case when you are waiting for something abstract or non-specific, like a bus, a train, or good weather. Because ты looks identical in both cases (тебя), it is an easy detail to miss!
Why use внизу instead of вниз for "downstairs"?
Russian uses different words for static location ("where") and direction or motion ("to where"). Внизу means you are already located in that place (waiting downstairs). If you were telling someone to go downstairs, which involves motion toward that destination, you would use вниз.
Is it common to change the word order to Мы тебя ждём внизу?
Yes, it is extremely common. Russian word order is flexible, and in natural spoken Russian, short pronouns like тебя are often placed right before the verb. The core meaning stays the same, but the current order (Мы ждём тебя) puts a tiny bit more emphasis on the fact that it is you we are waiting for.
