Questions & Answers about Менеджер разрешил нам уйти рано.
Why does the sentence use the Dative case нам instead of the Accusative нас?
In English we say 'allowed us', but in Russian, the verb разрешить (to allow or permit) requires the Dative case for the person receiving the permission. Think of it as giving permission to us. That is why we use нам instead of the direct object нас.
Why is the perfective verb уйти used here rather than the imperfective уходить?
We use the perfective уйти because the manager allowed a single, specific completed action: leaving early on this one occasion. If the sentence meant 'The manager used to allow us to leave early every Friday' (a repeated habit), you would use the imperfective уходить.
Is уйти only for leaving on foot? What if we drive home from work?
While уйти literally involves walking, it is the standard default verb for departing a place like a workplace, a school, or a meeting, regardless of how you travel once you are outside. You would only use уехать if you specifically wanted to emphasize leaving by transport.
What is the imperfective pair for разрешил?
The imperfective form is разрешать. Because it is the same verb root and meaning, it also governs the Dative case for the person being permitted to do something.
