Questions & Answers about Мой кот любит ложиться на левый бок.
Why is it на левый бок (Accusative) instead of the Prepositional case, since the cat is lying on its side?
Because the verb ложиться means "to lie down"—it is an action of assuming a position, which Russian treats as motion toward a destination. When expressing motion or direction with на, we use the Accusative case. If the cat were already lying there (using the state verb лежит), we would use the Prepositional case.
Why do we use the imperfective verb ложиться here instead of the perfective лечь?
After verbs that express a habit, preference, or ongoing state—like любить (to like) or начинать (to begin)—you must always use an imperfective infinitive. The cat does not just want to lie down one time; it is something he generally likes doing.
Why doesn't the phrase левый бок change its endings for the Accusative case?
Бок (side) is a masculine inanimate noun. In Russian, masculine inanimate nouns and their modifying adjectives look exactly the same in the Accusative case as they do in the Nominative (dictionary) form.
Can I use бок to talk about the side of an object, like the side of a street or a box?
No, бок usually refers specifically to the side or flank of a living body (human or animal). If you want to talk about the side of an inanimate object, an abstract side, or a direction (like the left side of the street), you should use the word сторона.
