Questions & Answers about Вчера нам пришлось перенести рейс, который был вечером.
Why do we use the Dative нам and the neuter form пришлось here instead of a normal subject?
The verb приходиться (to have to due to circumstances) is impersonal. The person experiencing the necessity takes the Dative case (нам), and the verb is fixed in the neuter singular for the past tense (пришлось), followed by the infinitive (перенести).
I know перенести means to carry something across. How does it mean to postpone?
The prefix пере- implies moving or transferring something to a new place or state. When talking about events, meetings, or flights (рейс), moving them to a new time means to postpone or reschedule them.
If рейс is the direct object of the first clause, why is который in the Nominative case?
A relative pronoun like который takes its gender and number from the noun it refers to (masculine singular for рейс), but it takes its case from its role in its own clause. In the second part of the sentence, который is the subject (the flight was), so it must be Nominative.
Why does the word for evening (вечер) have the ending -ом here?
This is the Instrumental case. Russian uses the Instrumental form of times of day and seasons to say when something happened. While вечер is the noun evening, вечером acts as an adverb meaning in the evening.
