Questions & Answers about Я использую этот прибор, чтобы нагревать химический раствор.
In English the sentence just says "to heat", but the Russian uses чтобы нагревать. Why do we need чтобы?
In English, the infinitive ("to heat") is often enough to show purpose. In Russian, to express "in order to do something," you must use the conjunction чтобы followed by the infinitive.
How would the meaning change if I swapped чтобы for пока (while), which we are learning in this lesson?
It would change the second half of the sentence from a clause of purpose to a clause of time. Я использую этот прибор, чтобы нагревать... means you use the device for the purpose of heating the solution. If you said ...пока нагреваю..., it would mean "I use this device while I am heating..."—implying you are doing the heating by some other means, and just using this device at the same time.
Why is the imperfective verb нагревать used here instead of the perfective нагреть?
The present tense verb использую (I use) shows that this is a general, repeated habit. Because the action of heating happens regularly, we use the imperfective infinitive нагревать. If this were a single, one-time event (like "I used the device to heat it once"), you would use the perfective нагреть.
Where does the -у- come from in использую (from the infinitive использовать)?
