Questions & Answers about Новый процессор гораздо мощнее.
Can I use очень instead of гораздо to say "much more powerful"?
No, this is a common trap! You cannot use очень (very) with comparative adjectives like мощнее. To say "much more" or intensify a comparative in Russian, you must use words like гораздо or намного.
Could I use намного in this sentence instead of гораздо?
Yes, Новый процессор намного мощнее is perfectly correct. When intensifying a comparative adjective, гораздо and намного mean the same thing ("much" or "a lot"). Гораздо is just slightly more emphatic and is strictly used before comparatives.
What is the base form of мощнее?
The base adjective is мощный (powerful). To make it comparative, you remove the -ый ending and add the standard comparative suffix -ее, making мощнее. Remember that this -ее form never changes to match the noun's gender, number, or case!
Why is there no verb like "is" in this sentence?
In Russian, the present tense of the verb "to be" is almost always omitted. So instead of saying "The new processor IS much more powerful," Russian simply places the subject and its description side by side: "New processor much more powerful" (Новый процессор гораздо мощнее).
