Questions & Answers about Нам нужно скачать больше.
What is больше the comparative form of here?
Больше means 'more'. It is the irregular comparative form of the adverb много (a lot/much). It is also the comparative of the adjective большой (big), but in this sentence, it tells us how much we need to download, so it acts as an adverb meaning 'more'.
Will больше change its ending if we specify the things we are downloading?
No, it will stay exactly the same. Irregular comparative words like больше (more), меньше (less), лучше (better), and хуже (worse) do not change form to match gender, number, or case.
Why does the sentence use нам instead of мы?
To express 'need' in Russian, you use the Dative case for the person who needs something, followed by нужно or надо. Нам is the Dative form of мы (we). Literally, this sentence translates to 'To us it is necessary to download more'.
Why is it нужно and not нужен or нужна?
When you state that you need to do an action (using an infinitive verb like скачать), the word нужно is always used in this default form. It only changes form to match gender and number when you state that you need a specific noun (like 'a phone' or 'a book'), rather than an action.
