Questions & Answers about Я выхожу из лифта в тёмный подъезд.
Why do we use the preposition из with выхожу?
Verbs of motion with the prefix вы- (meaning out of) almost always pair with the preposition из (meaning from or out of) plus the genitive case. Since you are moving from inside the elevator to the outside, you use из лифта.
Why is it в тёмный подъезд (accusative) and not в тёмном подъезде (prepositional)?
Because you are moving into the stairwell. When the preposition в indicates the destination or direction of motion, it takes the accusative case. If you were already standing still inside the stairwell, you would use the prepositional case (в тёмном подъезде).
тёмный подъезд looks like the dictionary form. Is it really in the accusative case here?
Yes! For masculine inanimate nouns like подъезд (and their adjectives), the accusative case looks exactly the same as the nominative (dictionary) form.
What exactly does подъезд mean here?
In Russian apartment buildings, a подъезд is the shared indoor space that connects the street doors to the apartments, including the lobby, stairwells, and elevator landings. Stairwell or entrance hall is the best way to picture it.
