Questions & Answers about Цирк в центре.
Why is there no word for "is" in this sentence?
In Russian, the verb "to be" is skipped in the present tense. You literally say Цирк в центре (Circus in centre). You don't need a word for "is".
Why does центре end in an -е?
The dictionary form of the word is центр. When you talk about the location of something using в (in), Russian changes the noun's ending to show location. This is called the Prepositional case. For most masculine nouns like центр, you add an -е to the end, making it центре.
How do you pronounce the first letter in цирк and центре?
The Russian letter ц makes a "ts" sound, exactly like the end of the English word "cats". So цирк sounds like "tsirk".
Where are the words for "the" in this sentence?
Russian doesn't use articles like "a" or "the". The word цирк can mean "circus", "a circus", or "the circus". We know it means "the circus" in English here simply based on context.
