Questions & Answers about Папа готовил мясо и рис.
Why do we use the imperfective verb готовил here instead of the perfective form?
The English translation "was cooking" describes an ongoing action or a process in the past. In Russian, we use the imperfective aspect (готовил) to focus on the process rather than the result. If he had completely finished cooking it, we would use the perfective verb приготовил (meaning "cooked" or "finished cooking").
Папа ends in -а, which is usually a feminine ending. Why does the verb готовил have the masculine past tense ending -л?
Past tense verbs must match the gender of the noun doing the action. Even though папа ends in -а, it refers to a male person ("dad") and is therefore a masculine noun. Because of this, it takes the masculine verb ending -л instead of the feminine -ла.
Why didn't the endings of мясо and рис change, since they are the objects being cooked?
They actually are in the accusative case, which we use for the direct objects of a verb. However, for inanimate (non-living) neuter nouns like мясо and inanimate masculine nouns like рис, the accusative form is completely identical to their dictionary (nominative) form. That is why they look unchanged!
Does the verb готовил only mean "was cooking"?
When used with food items like meat and rice, it naturally means "was cooking." However, the base verb готовить more broadly means "to prepare." You will also see it used for preparing other things, like preparing a report or preparing for an exam.
