Questions & Answers about Мы скоро обедаем.
Why is the present tense verb обедаем used when скоро means "soon"?
Just like in English ("We are having lunch soon"), Russian often uses the present tense to talk about fixed plans in the near future. The time word скоро makes it completely clear that the action hasn't started yet.
Is обедаем related to the noun обед (lunch)?
Yes! In Russian, you usually don't "have lunch" using two separate words. Instead, there is a specific verb for it: обедать (to eat lunch). Обедаем is the conjugated "we" form (мы).
Can I put скоро at the end of the sentence, like we do in English?
You can say Мы обедаем скоро, but it sounds a bit unnatural unless you are trying to strongly emphasize the word "soon". In Russian, it's most common to put time adverbs right before the verb.
How do I pronounce the first letter of обедаем?
Because the stress falls on the е (обе́даем), the unstressed о at the very beginning of the word weakens and sounds like an "a" (ah-BYEH-dah-yem).
