Questions & Answers about Этот текст интересный.
Why do we use Этот here instead of the word Это?
Это by itself acts as a complete phrase meaning 'This is' (as in Это текст - 'This is a text'). But when 'this' is attached directly to a noun (like 'This text...'), it must match the noun's gender. Since текст is masculine, we must use the masculine form этот.
Where is the word for 'is' in this sentence?
Russian completely drops the verb 'to be' in the present tense. You simply put the subject and the description side by side. Этот текст интересный literally means 'This text interesting'.
How do we know that текст is masculine?
You can usually find a Russian noun's gender by looking at its last letter. Nouns that end in a consonant, like the т in текст, are almost always masculine.
Why does интересный end in -ый?
Adjectives in Russian must match the gender of the noun they describe. Because текст is masculine, the adjective takes the standard masculine ending -ый.
