Questions & Answers about Она студентка?
How do I know this is a question if the words are in the same order as a statement?
In Russian, yes/no questions often use the exact same word order as regular statements. The statement for "She is a student" is simply Она студентка. To turn it into a question, you just add a question mark in writing and change your intonation when speaking. You don't need to move words around or add helper words like "is" or "does".
How should my voice sound when asking Она студентка?
When asking a yes/no question without changing the word order, your voice should jump up in pitch on the specific word you are asking about, and then drop back down. Here, you are asking if she is a student, so your voice goes sharply up and then quickly down on the stressed syllable -дент- in the word студентка.
Wait, where is the word for "is" in this sentence?
Russian does not use a word for "am", "is", or "are" in the present tense. You just place the subject and the noun next to each other, so the sentence is literally just "She student".
Why does the sentence use студентка instead of just студент?
In Russian, many nouns for professions or roles change depending on the person's gender. Студент is used for a male university student, while студентка is used for a female student. Because the subject of our sentence is Она (she), we must use the feminine form студентка.
