Asking Yes/No Questions

In Russian, asking a yes-or-no question is simple: use the exact same word order as a regular statement. Just raise your pitch on the key word you are asking about (and add a question mark when writing).

Answering with "Yes"

To answer positively, begin with да (yes).

Saying "No" and "Not"

To answer negatively, start your sentence with нет (no).

To say that something is not something else, place не (not) immediately before the word you are negating. Don't mix them up: нет is the opposite of "yes," while не makes a specific word negative.

Putting It Together

You can combine these basic questions and answers with words you already know, like и (and) or а (and/but, used for contrast), to add details or correct someone.
