Когда Beyond the Question

You met когда? as a question word — Когда ты работаешь? The same word joins two sentences in time, exactly like English when:

*Когда я был дома, я читал.* — When I was at home, I read.

The когда-half can come first or second; a comma always separates the halves.

Both Orders

The meaning does not change — Russian simply starts with whichever half matters more.

Habits and Single Events

With present-tense verbs, когда describes what happens regularly: Когда я завтракаю, я слушаю музыку. With past-tense verbs it sets the scene for a story: Когда мы жили в деревне, у нас была собака.
