Many Russian verbs end in the suffixes -овать and -евать. This is a common pattern, especially for adopted international words (like информировать or протестовать).
When conjugating these verbs in the present tense, the -ова- or -ева- suffix drops out and is replaced by -у- or -ю-. They then take standard First Conjugation endings (-ю, -ешь, -ет, -ем, -ете, -ют).
| Pronoun | командовать (to command) | ночевать (to spend the night) |
|---|---|---|
| я | командую | ночую |
| ты | командуешь | ночуешь |
| он / она / оно | командует | ночует |
| мы | командуем | ночуем |
| вы | командуете | ночуете |
| они | командуют | ночуют |
Note: *ночевать takes -у- instead of -ю- because ч is a "hushing" consonant that cannot be followed by ю.*
Notice how the -ова- and -ева- suffixes disappear entirely in the present tense forms below:
| Are you really commanding the project and dictating the rules? | Разве ты командуешь проектом и диктуешь правила? |
| Despite the fact that the boss criticizes us, we do not ignore his advice. | Несмотря на то, что начальник нас критикует, мы не игнорируем его советы. |
| Tomorrow we are staying overnight in the hotel and talking with the most important partners. | Завтра мы ночуем в гостинице и беседуем с самыми важными партнёрами. |
| Why are these people protesting on the square, and not voting? | Почему эти люди протестуют на площади, а не голосуют? |
| I advise you not to ignore this most useful method. | Я советую вам не игнорировать этот самый полезный метод. |
